I have long been a fan of coconut oil and I am about to convince you why you should love it too. The oil found in coconut is one of the healthiest choices you can make for your diet. No longer are the fats found in coconut oil wrongly deemed harmful to the body. Fats which have long been blamed for heart disease are not always the enemy. As a matter of fact, coconut oil is good for the heart in addition to providing other positives for the body.
If you look outside of our culture and explore the history of the world you will find several examples of cultures who use coconut oil as a cornerstone of their diet and have the longevity to prove it (think Thailand and India).
Lauric acid is a fatty acid that is found in coconut oil making up about half of the fatty acid content of coconut oil. Lauric acid is great at killing off bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms (which we certainly don't want to be introducing to our bodies). Lauric acid is relatively uncommon. It can be found it human breast milk, 6.2%, as well as in goat’s milk, 3.1%, and in small portions in cows milk 2.9%. All these pale in comparison to the near 50% mark of coconut milk.
The fatty acid in coconut oil famous for its ability to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) the good cholesterol. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Lauric acid’s effect on HDL is more beneficial than any other fatty acid.
You can also use coconut oil to cook with. It has a higher than average smoking point which makes it ideal for frying. Smoking point indicates at what temperature the oil will cook off or burn. A high smoking point means the oil will last longer during cooking. Using olive oil which has a low smoking point is just a waste. Not only is using olive oil to fry a waste, eating burned oil is not good for the body. You don’t like eating charcoal, right?
